Proud home to the world-famous Seattle Symphony, the Benaroya Hall is unique among concert halls for its incredible technological acoustics, and is a well-known landmark in Seattle for its prominent yet seamless integration into the town centre, with commercial life continuing along one avenue of the building and a terraced garden, open to the public, along the other.

When you visit the Benaroya Hall in Seattle, you’ll be getting two for the price of one! The site hosts two separate performance halls built into a modern city complex, which occupies an entire city block downtown Seattle. Designed to integrate with the real core of Seattle, Benaroya Hall highlights the crucial role of performance events in the life of the city. It’s flanked by a commercial avenue and a public terraced garden.

First opened in September 1998, Seattle’s Benaroya Hall is the new home of the Seattle Symphony. Over 700 public and private events take place here each year, including the flagship Seattle Symphony concerts. The smaller, Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall offers the same high quality acoustics as the larger auditorium, in a warm and inviting environment. This is an intimate auditorium where you can get up close and personal with musical performances, film screenings, corporate meetings and lectures.

Benaroya Hall is famous for the artwork commissioned as part of its design, showcasing the glass artist Dale Chihuly and American modernist Robert Rauschenberg. You’ll also find other amazing artworks as you wander inside and around Benaroya Hall. The site also includes a Garden of Remembrance, dedicated to many of those from Washington State who served in various wars.

The central focus of Benaroya Hall is its 2,479-seat auditorium, named after the S. Mark Taper Foundation who generously funded it. The auditorium is designed for purpose, with state-of-the-art acoustics, where you can see both amplified or unplugged musical concerts. It also hosts a wide range of other events like wedding receptions, graduations, business functions, etc.

Because of its fabulous design, the sound in this auditorium is exceptional, wherever you sit. The traditional shape, with its massive wood and plaster surfaces, was carefully detailed to diffuse sound effectively, thus providing excellent acoustics throughout. In this auditorium, acoustical physics is an integral part of the architectural design, with all outside noise eliminated by the clever building method. When you come to a concert at Benaroya Hall, the concert is all you’ll hear!

Aside from Seattle Symphony and jazz seasons, notable performers at Benaroya Hall have included Tracy Chapman, Ringo Starr, Emmylou Harris, Lou Kottke, Joan Baez, UB40, Brandi Carlile and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Check the Events page to see what’s on! Upcoming Events
